Tuesday Tips or Techniques-Spreading Ink Technique!

September 18, 2012 8 Comments

I have a really awesome technique for you today called the “Spreading Ink Technique”. I actually experimented on my own for the end result of my technique. Take a peek at my completed card and I’ll explain below:

The technique calls for “Glossy Cardstock” and I thought I would try it with “Watercolor Paper” instead. Here are the supplies you will need:

  • Watercolor Paper
  • Spray bottle with water
  • Aqua Painter
  • Ink Refills
  • VersaMark Ink
  • White Embossing Powder
  • Heat Tool
  • Stamps-line images work best
  • Light-colored Stampin’ Write Marker
  • Painter’s Palette or dish for your reinkers. Empty embellishment containers also work well

Start by adding a few drops of each chosen ink color in your palette. The ink colors I used for today’s card are Tangerine Tango & Daffodil Delight:

Stamp your images using VersaMark Ink and Sprinkle with White Embossing Powder. Heat set with your Heat Tool:

EDITED: a few of you asked if I “masked” the images I used for my card and the answer is yes. I created “masks” using Post-It notes and layered my flowers as shown.

Using your spray bottle, spray your images until wet. You will notice pools of water in each section. Do not over-spray so that the ink flows too freely. Using your Aqua Painter, pick up one ink color by touching the tip to one of your ink colors. I like to start with the lightest color first. Now proceed to coloring some of your stamped images by touching to tip of your Aqua Painter to the top of your pooled water as I did below:

Add a 2nd color here and there to create the highlights. The 2 colors will flow into each other as shown. Allow to dry. I wouldn’t recommend drying with a Heat Tool as you don’t want the color to move around too much:

It looks a bit messy and you might think you did not do a great job but once dry, look at the difference below:

The top photo is now dry. Proceed to the last step shown in the photo below.

Using a light colored Stampin’ Write Marker (I used Blush Blossom for my sample), trace the outside of your embossing. This little trick makes the lines stand so you actually see more of the detail:

Complete your card as desired. I have listed all the supplies below:

Card Supplies:

  • Cardstock: Daffodil Delight, Watercolor Paper
  • DSP: Brights Paper Pack
  • Inks: VersaMark, Tangerine Tango, Daffodil Delight
  • Tools: Big Shot Machine, Top Note Die, Designer Label Punch, Stampin’ Dimensionals, White Embossing Powder, Heat Tool, Aqua Painter
  • Accessories: Pearl Jewels
  • Miscellaneous: Spray Bottle with Water, Painter’s Palette or dish
  • Stamps: Fabulous Florets, Blessings From Heaven

Lovely card, and wonderful tutorial. I finally understand how to do this, and using watercolor paper makes sense. Thank you!
